The Things We Say Today
I set iTunes to shuffle all my music and just now ‘You Don’t Have Very Far to Go’ by Merle Haggard played. Each time I hear a song from this CD – Big City – I think of a friend of mine Dave Hendry. Dave was an old fashioned man who lived on the outskirts of Pearce, Arizona. I first met him when I was working for a guest ranch near Pearce. He, resident cowboy Danny and Dave’s daughter Danielle who played violin made up the Grapevine Canyon Ranch band and they played every Thursday and every New Year’s Eve. Dave was a very kind, decent, hardworking man and I am very happy to have had the chance to have met him.
Dave passed away a couple years ago and I feel blessed to have this Merle Haggard CD that he made for me to remember him by. Dave did not sing very often; he played guitar and offered backup vocals on some songs. One evening he sang ‘I Always Get Lucky With You’ and I fell in love with the song. I asked once who originally sang the song and he told me it was Merle Haggard. He offered to make a copy of the CD he had at home and I gladly accepted. True to his word, he brought it the next time the band came to play.
When it came time to leave the ranch, I offered my goodbyes to everyone including Dave and I promised him that I would keep in touch. I believe I wrote one letter perhaps subconsciously thinking I could write anytime but that time never came. Now, he is gone and there is a part of me that has regret for not taking the time to say the things I wanted to say when I had the chance to say them. I think of all the things I will say today and I realize that I need to pay more attention to saying things that matter to those I care about the most while I have that chance.
I am not really sure who reads this blog but I know a few of you get notifications when I post something new so I will take this moment to say a few things to each of you.
